Babu Xavier

Babu Xavier is a 1960-born artist who resides in Trivandrum, Kerala. His canvases are alive with vibrant colours and fascinating animals. With watercolours that seem to reflect light almost like a prism, his brushes create practically human forms with some sexual connotations by painting on full-blooded reds, vivid yellows, and brilliant blues and greens. He received apprenticeship training from J. Panicker, which enabled him to develop his own distinctive, surreal and sensual style and language by helping him comprehend the visual language in a more nuanced and detailed way. His art is provocative and draws inspiration from a range of areas, including nature, science, the mind, and the subconscious. Xavier has participated in numerous exhibitions in India, including the International Triennale of Art in New Delhi, the Bharat Bhavan Biennale, and international venues in Basel and Copenhagen. He is quite clear about his goals when it comes to his career. “I don’t create art to fit people’s walls or to adorn residences. My paintings include a great deal of contradiction, which may be really unsettling.
