Bhaskara Rao

The artwork of Bhaskara Rao Botcha, an artist living in Hyderabad, is influenced by the natural world, especially trees. With each painting, the artist revisits his muse with a fresh perspective, reimagining trees in a variety of media, colours, settings, and textures. Rao earned his MFA in painting from the University of Hyderabad (Central University) in 2001 after completing his BFA in painting at Andhra University in Visakhapatnam in 1999. Rao’s early forays into figurative and graffiti painting eventually lead him to natural settings. They consequently caused him to become interested in trees, which turned out to be his leitmotif and the focal point of his professional artistic body of work. Bhaskara Rao’s early life in Salur, a small town in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, is the source of his bond with trees. He has happy memories of being taken by his father to plant a mango tree on their cashew and mango farm. Seeing the mango tree flourish was one of young Rao’s favourite trips to the fields, which sparked his naive and enduring love of the natural world. For Bhaskara Rao, trees are not just important to the ecosystem; they are also revered cultural symbols. Indian legend states that trees, or “vriksha,” were Anala’s children from her marriage to the renowned sage Kashyapa. In addition to producing fruit, trees safeguard the surface of the soil by offering cover and shade. More broadly, Rao worries about the long-term harm we inflict on nature in our self-serving rush to advance, and his artwork serves as a reminder of the spiritual connection that exists between his country’s trees and its people.
