Binoy Varghese

Varghese, who was born in Kerala in 1966, graduated from the RLV College of Fine Arts in Kochi with a National Diploma in Fine Arts. Varghese began his career in the art field as an assistant at the Madhavan Nair Foundation India in Kochi and later moved to the Chennai-based Cholamandalam Artists’ Village. Additionally, Varghese has served as an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre for Arts in Canada, the Apparao Galleries in New Delhi, and the Kanoria Art Centre in Ahmedabad. Varghese’s method of painting is influenced by his background in the film business and his work as a poster artist. Varghese is well-known for his photorealist paintings, which incorporate elements from many other genres. His approach is influenced by digital, cinematic, and photographic media, and the majority of the subjects are women and children set against vibrant, crowded backgrounds. Varghese stated, “When I am painting a canvas, I am completely involved and that is what impresses me and keeps me coming back to it,” in a November 2017 interview with The Hindu. I am essentially “making” the work from the minute I start selecting the images until I finish composing them and painting them onto the canvas using the referenced photo as a guide. Making it my own, I make small but significant adjustments to the composition and the figures.
