Dileep Sharma
Dileep Sharma, born in Rajasthan in 1974, received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Rajasthan School of Arts in Jaipur in 1996, followed by a Master’s degree from the Sir J J School of Art in Mumbai in 1998. Addressing his encounters with items, people, civilizations, customs, and emotions, he has stated that his art reflects world cultural and sociopolitical challenges. Fashion is central to Sharma’s work, and his fragmented, colourful themes reflect his humorous take on an advertising-dominated world. Sharma began his artistic career at Mumbai’s Prithvi Gallery with a self-portrait exhibition. This resulted in the birth of his now-famous alter ego, Kunwarji, who has progressively evolved into an autonomous subject. Sharma’s use of motifs that represent parts of media, popular culture, and fashion gives his images a feeling of humour and fantasy. He is unfettered in his creative process, merging hard facts with an overwhelming sense of resolve to produce a celebration of the human spirit.
