Duality is that which operates in opposite directions – it is in order and disorder; in the process of making and unmaking. To call something dual – involves a bifurcation of purpose – showing areas of dissimilarity among the apparent identical things. The conundrums of duality are not exclusively situated in objects rather they get woven into the subject matter. Distilled Duality brings together work made over the last three years by artist Sidharth Pansai along with new paintings made especially for this exhibition. The compulsion of investigating the interaction between subject and object forms the core of Sidharth’s artistic practice.
Painting as a transitional process, is a medium that is capable of offering the most complex, polemic and double edged forms of visual experience. The artist appropriates geometric forms and kilos of pigment, to recreate a unique idiom of non-objectivity and productive tension.
Numerous layers of colour get dismissed as inconsequential and fresh paint in strong strokes comes to the fore. The works emerge as self-generating architecture of geometric forms where the element of control gets delegated to the viewer. The spatial consciousness together with the textural paraphernalia, in his paintings creates an overpowering monumentality.
Suggestive deep spaces in stark contrast to the subtle illuminations make different qualities of each pigment appear more pronounced. Through his works, the artist proliferates though a distilled reconciliation of allegorical opposites of form and colour, of geometry and space, of distance and dimension. The palpable physical and emotional effects in his works, he feels is indebted,
