“My life and my cultural identity carve the directions of my expression. Inspirations for expression emerge around and within me. I want my creative concerns to be relevant to my times, imbibing local, regional, and universal consciousness. I want to express these in my own creative visual imagery. I want to evolve and leave behind creative visual symbols as references to our times. I think in color and achieve consistent factor (Sthai Bhava) to accomplish creativity in my paintings.”

So says Gogi Saroj Pal, an artist comfortable working with such diverse mediums as installation, painting, sculpture, graphic print, ceramics, jewelry, weaving, and photography. Gogi, who was educated at the College of Art in Lucknow and the College of Art in Vanasthali, Rajasthan, was born in the small Uttar Pradesh village of Neoli in 1945. Her artistic expressions stem from her quest for a cultural identity and a point of reference for the times we live in. Gogi’s paintings are intended to portray the ups and downs of a woman’s life, serving as a mirror to society and highlighting the differences in relationships between the sexes. Gogi aspires to leave a legacy of photographs that faithfully capture our everyday existence and the problems that confront humanity. “My goal is to develop and preserve imaginative visual symbols and icons that serve as contemporary references, filling in the gaps in the continuity of our cultural identity and being utilised in contemporary issues and epics,” says Gogi. Gogi uses material from her keen observations of the world around her and her thorough soul search to create paintings of intricate visual impressions.
