"Black remains my favourite colour - it helps me establish a base and I pay other colours to balance it off." Gopi Gajwani, a painter and graphic designer, was born in Sind before the partition in 1938. He graduated in Graphic Designing from the Delhi School of Art in 1959, and with Delhi as his base, established himself as a most versatile and multidimensional artist, winning accolades for his designs, paintings, cartoons and caricatures. Gopi Gajwani made a name for himself as an unambiguous abstract painter over the years after he graduated. He is an outstanding craftsman, excelling in faultlessly created surfaces and areas of hue. His large sized canvases are devoid of form or specific shape, but communicate through their texture, colour and the brushwork the artist employs. Each part of Gajwani`s canvases contributes to the whole, lending to his aim of communicating through colour. Gajwani`s favourite medium is oil on canvas though he has done work in various other media like watercolour, Chinese ink and acrylic. This artist`s objective is to manipulate colours and stretch their visual appeal to its furthest. He knows his colours like friends, understanding their smallest nuances and all of their abilities. Critics have often categorized his work as abstract expressionism, but Gajwani describes it as a melody in abstraction, and feels that he succeeds in conveying a deep meaning by painting contrasting colour areas around a certain basic colour scheme. Gajwani has also had a hand in designing more than thirty coffee table books and photo spreads, two of which contain photographs that he himself has taken. This artist worked as a designer at the American Centre for twenty-nine years and has created some stunning posters for them. In addition to all this, Gajwani has also gained fame with his other talents - he is a well-known cartoonist, illustrator and even a filmmaker. Gopi Gajwani has held several solo exhibitions of his oils and watercolours, most being held at the Shridharani Art Gallery in New Delhi. He has also shown his works in Mumbai and Varanasi in one-man exhibitions, and participated in group exhibitions in India as well as Bulgaria, Korea and Switzerland.
