Shakti Buram
Sakti Burman, who was born in 1935 in Kolkata, attended the Government College of Arts and Crafts in her home city before continuing her education at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Burman creates fresco-like paintings on paper and canvas using pointillism and a marbling technique that combines oils and acrylics. Burman frequently references multiplicities of time and location in his works, giving them a surrealist sense. In addition to drawing heavily from his own recollections, the artist also drew inspiration from European and Hindu mythology. His surrealistic-looking paintings feature people, animals, and dreamlike cityscapes, all hinting at surrealism. After years of experimentation, he perfected his marbling method, which is largely responsible for his iconic work. When Burman visited Italy in 1958, he was inspired to incorporate the monumentality and textures of the frescoes by artists such as Giotto, Piero de la Francesca, and Simone Martini into his own works.
